Chapter Fourteen

~JULES~

I stood in front of the bathroom mirror, a towel wrapped around my middle, while I examined myself. There were three—yes, three—hickies visible above my neckline and two more lower down, one beneath my collarbone, the other above my right breast. I traced one of the marks with my fingertips.

Ruben had always liked to suck on my skin. A vampire thing, I suppose. And since he couldn’t mark me with his teeth, he left the next best thing. He was one-hundred percent leaving visible signs for anyone to see that I was well and truly taken.

Of course, we’d left a few visible signs in the bedroom as well. Between a torn comforter, a broken end table, lamp, and cracked pane of glass, Declan would know we’d either fought to the death in here or we’d fucked like…well, like vampires. The windowpane had shattered when I’d tried to get up and go downstairs to find a glass of water after we were cuddling in bed. Ruben wouldn’t have it. He’d fucked me against the window, and it had been his palm breaking the pane when he’d pounded it during orgasm. Then he’d gone to get me the water.

Smiling at that, I picked up my brush and was brushing my hair when Ruben walked into the bathroom completely naked and stopped at my back. He took the brush from me and gently continued. Letting my arms fall, I looked at his reflection, how his body was so much larger than mine, the sculpted muscles of his arms flexing as he dragged the brush through my short hair.

Then he stopped, leaned forward, and placed the brush on the counter, his bare chest brushing my shoulders. I shivered. That simple skin-on-skin contact awakened my senses instantly. He combed his fingers through my short, damp hair, watching me in the mirror as he tucked it behind my ears on both sides.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, all seriousness this morning.

“Incredible,” I answered quickly, to which he smiled. “And sore.”

He nodded, his expression sobering. “I knew you would be. I’m sorry about that.”

“If I recall correctly, you said last night that you couldn’t help but be rough.”

“Oh, I’m not sorry about what and how you got sore. That was inevitable. I’m simply sorry you have to suffer.”

“I’m not suffering, Ruben. Not at all.”

“I’ll try to be gentler, but I have to warn you, I will be on you as often as possible for a while, making up for lost time.”

“That’s fine by me. And you don’t have to be gentle, either. I like the rough vampire.”

A flare of those sapphire eyes caught me in the mirror, then he went back to looking at my body. His hands coasted along my neck to my shoulders then down my arms and back up. He seemed in a trance, his warm palms never stopping their slow movements. It was delightful.

“What are you doing?” I teased. “Petting me?”

His expression remained grave, serious. “For so long, I was forbidden from touching you.
